Our special feature today is on "Vegetables," another term for patients in deep states of slumber. Our investigation follows one such woman, digging deep into her family's turbulent, dramatic situation.
The longer our coverage continued, the more fantasy and reality seemed to diverge. Though the parents wished to go on with the treatment, they were confronted with rapidly increasing costs. The tranquil face of their sleeping daughter began to contrast with the faces of the family, colored by exhaustion.
Just weeks after we began filming, the girl's condition took a turn for the worse and she exhaled her final breath. Everyone said it happened in an instant. The long, long battle fought by the family was thus brought to a bitter end.
Days later, we received some astonishing news. The girl's death occurred at the behest of her mother. After trying for so long to keep her alive, why had she resorted to such means? We decided to continue with our coverage.

我々が密着取材を行ってからわずか数週間。少女の容体は急変し、息を引き取った。あっという間の出来事だったという。こうして一家の長い長い戦いは、あっけなく幕を下ろした。
