In the beginning, the Divine brought blessings to a desolate land. The heart of the blessing were gemstones that contained all the light of the Divine, stones such that could never be polished into a shape by mortal hands.
The Divine looked upon the gems and the light that they contained, and saw that it was good. Mortals, thinking the stones to be vessels of the Divine, took to gathering them and lavishing them with reverence. Only afterwards, did they become known as jewels.
At length, the Divine departed and returned to the heavens, leaving mortals alone upon the earth. As time passed, the gemstones became but symbols of wealth for the mortals who possessed them. Curiously, people seemed more desperate to own them now, than when they had been symbols of divinity. They stole to get them. They killed to get them. They went to war.
As the land fell once more into desolation, buried under rivers of blood, the people vanished from the earth and only the jewels remained. The Divine gazed upon the lonely gems, reflecting that there were few sweeter things in this world than a powerful greed, and laughing so hard that ebon feathers shook loose and began fluttering to the ground.More Princess Kaguya Jobs[]
